Parade Winners
This year’s Farmers Day Parade had almost 100 separate entries, with beautiful floats, decorated cars and trucks, the latest in farm machinery, motorcycles, boats and music.

The theme was “Rockin’ the Town,” and that’s just what this parade did. People were lined three and four rows deep along Jesup city streets. Spectators not only received candy, they also got cold treats, Iowa maps, Frisbees, posters, flowers, note pads, and pens and pencils.

In keeping with the theme, there were a lot of pony tails, bobby socks, records and juke boxes in the parade. There were even one or two Elvis sightings.

Did everyone see the horse kicking the soccer ball?

Mona Rottinghaus, who entered the Mona’s Originals entry, simply brought her basement decor above ground and put it on a hay rack to make a float. She is a true ‘50s/’60s rock ‘n roll fan!

This was the first year that candy could not be thrown from the cars, floats or vehicles. People were asked to walk along with the entries to toss the candy to the crowd. For the most part, everyone followed the new rules, and parade organizers appreciated it.

Judges reviewed all the entries, and chose the winners for 2011.

Jesup Bible Fellowship was the Sweepstakes Winner, meaning their float was the best overall float in the 62nd Farmers Day Parade. Their theme was “Jesus is the Rock.” Their float was featured on the front page of last week’s printed edition of the Citizen Herald. They have won $150 cash prize from the Jesup Chamber of Commerce.
